Jane Elizabeth Baehr and Benjamin Thomas Shelton met in Charleston, South Carolina, in July 2002.

“He simply asked me my name,” recalls the bride, “and it was love at first sight.”  Five years later, on Sullivan’s Island Beach, where the couple spent one of their first dates, Ben proposed. The couple was married by the Reverend James Simpson “Stimp” Hawkins at Boone Hall Plantation in Mt. Pleasant,South Carolina, where a reception followed. The ceremony took place on the Cotton Dock, a 100-year-old replica of the original barn where cotton grown at the plantation was loaded onto barges and shipped into Charleston for sale.  

The bride is a graduate of New Canaan High School and received a bachelor’s degree in sociology from the College of Charleston. She is a sales representative for Southeastern Paper Group, headquartered in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Her parents are Christine and Terrence Baehr of New Canaan.

The groom is a graduate of Guilford College in Greensboro, North Carolina, with a bachelor’s degree in music. He graduated from the Charleston School of Law and is currently studying for the South Carolina bar exam. His parents are Steven and Olivia Shelton of Danbury, North Carolina.

The couple spent their honeymoon on Amelia Island, Florida, before returning home to Charleston, where they reside with their cat, Stuart, and their shepherd mix, Lucy.
