Shedding Light on Sunscreen

The "safest" sunscreens, info on UVA vs. UVB rays, and shedding light on issues with vitamin A, the chemical oxybenzone, and minerals like zinc in our sunscreens.

Put down the baby oil immediately. Those days of sunbathing with a tin foil reflector are over. Remember when tanning salons were touted as a "safe" way to tan because they only zapped you with UVA rays? Well guess what, recent studies show that UVA rays are as damaging to the skin as UVB rays, and may even cause some skin cancers. Until recently most sunscreens protected against only UVB rays.

What's the difference between UVA and UVB rays? Ms. Moffly found a lot of useful (and frightening) information at www.skincancer.org. According...

Dock 'n Dine

Ms. Moffly just loves to stretch out and sun myself while being cooled off by the sea spray that's kicked up as our sailboat tacks in the Long Island Sound. Then the day got even better when my captain treated me to a big surprise. He "valet docked" the boat and we strolled on our sea legs right up to the waterfront restaurant. Ms. Moffly has enjoyed fabulous meals and traveled to amazing places, but docking and dining was a whole new experience. I do believe the food tasted better and my cocktail was smoother. Driving to a restaurant is soooo wintertime.

No need to employ a chef on your ship, just dock your boat at these fantastic waterfront restaurants.

The Saltwater Grille has a stunning American Bistro menu with goodies like Shellfish...

Father Knows Best

He taught you how to ride your bike, throw a baseball, and a proper punch. Does your Dad really need another theme tie this Father's Day? Ms. Moffly has struggled over the years to find fun and useful gifts for my Dad. Here are some cool gifts for the best guy in your life.

Sporty
Custom Fitting at Greenwich Golf Fitting Studio. Using high tech equipment to evaluate your Dad's golf swing and ball flight is only part of this package which includes new clubs that are designed and built for him. Get this, he'll even receive a blue print of the clubs. (Frame the blue prints for his office as next year's gift.)

Wine Not?

It must have been last week’s glorious, unseasonably warm weekend that triggered Ms. Moffly’s memory of this posh wine bar in London, England. The wine bar’s doors opened to café tables on the sidewalk, where smartly dressed Londoners sat enjoying the warm spring evening while they swirled, sniffed, and sipped their wine. Ms. Moffly suddenly wanted to be at that wine bar. Considering the impracticality of jetting off to London at a moment’s notice, Ms. Moffly set out to find a chic wine bar on this side of the pond.

My first stop was at the Solaia Champagne House in Greenwich. Ms. Moffly and a few office buddies joined the other well-heeled couples at the bar. Solaia’s cozy wine cellar atmosphere was the perfect place to sip our fizzy,...

Gift of the Gab

Sometimes having a Gift of the Gab can get you into trouble. Just the other day Ms. Moffly was tastefully boasting about my baking skills. So of course my friends challenged me to bake some Irish Soda Bread for Saint Patrick’s Day. Not one to be intimidated, I said, “Oh it’ll be grand.”

I dusted off my Aunt’s Irish Soda Bread recipe from the Emerald Isle, gathered my ingredients, and promptly froze. The recipe read, “Beat together 1 egg, sour cream, and buttermilk. 2 cups worth.” Huh? Followed by, “Mix in the dry ingredients: not too flakey, not too wet.” Perhaps something was lost in translation?

Undaunted, Ms. Moffly’s afternoon of baking exploration began. Sadly one loaf was as tough as a rugby ball and my...

Get Bald for St. Baldrick’s

Every year the St. Baldrick's Foundation organizes volunteers to shave their heads in solidarity with kids fighting cancer. While Ms. Moffly loves to get a new hairstyle, I’m not quite brave enough shave off all my hair. However, still eager to be involved, Ms. Moffly is happily sponsoring some fantastic kids who are going for it and shaving their heads this March to raise money to fight childhood cancer!

The St. Baldrick's Foundation uses the donations to fund more in childhood cancer research grants than any other organization except the United States Government! In 2009 alone, 33,373 people shaved their heads and raised $16,634,855 at shaving events around the world.

Get involved and find out what great local establishments are hosting shaving parties, like...

Antiques on the cheap

Discount furniture chain stores served a purpose for Ms. Moffly in my early post-college years. But now Ms. Moffly’s ready to acquire some furniture and accessories that truly match my style and verve. Medium Density Fiberboard, be gone! Ms. Moffly likes a deal as much as the next gal, so I decided to look for antiques on the cheap. Why pay an exorbitant sum when I can get that Chippendale on sale?

Braswell Galleries is one of the Northeast’s biggest antique and auction houses. Yes, you can go and be the highest bidder; but don’t forget to visit their incredible Warehouse Tag Sale. On Friday’s you get an additional 10% off. Located in The Old Norwalk Lace Factory at 1 Muller Avenue in Norwalk (203) 847-1234. Open Monday – Saturday...

Sip Safely

Ms. Moffly has appreciated the serenity a sippy cup provides when entertaining includes children. Recently, however, it was reported that many plastic containers are made with BPA: a toxin that is particularly dangerous for babies and children. Also troubling is the pile up of plastic at our landfills. Do we forgo using the sippy cup? Absolutely not! Instead, Ms. Moffly turned to the new trend in sippy cups—eco-friendly, non-toxic, “food grade” stainless steel products.

“Food grade” stainless steel is free of BPA, phthalates, lead, and other toxins; therefore, it doesn’t require a liner. It doesn't retain or emit flavors, which is why stainless steel is the material most commonly used in the winemaking industries. If it’s good for the...

Good Things Come in Small Packages

When we were kids we all went bananas for over-sized gifts. The bigger the box the better! That giant box could be concealing a Big Wheel, a Barbie penthouse, or a battery powered kid-sized SUV! However, there comes a time when you realize it’s the little packages that really make your pulse race. What gorgeous surprise awaits you in that petite box? The old adage that good things come in small packages still holds true.

These talented designers are some of Ms. Moffly’s favorites and they live right here in Fairfield County. You will treasure this jewelry—it’s fine art.

All the World's a Stage

Some of Ms. Moffly’s friends have deigned to call me dramatic. I prefer to call it panache. So instead of acting out, Ms. Moffly’s decided to see some professional actors in the limelight.

You don’t need to drive all the way to New York City’s “Great White Way” to see quality theatrical productions. There are wonderful theater companies that host talented performers and interesting productions right here in Fairfield County.

Foster your inner Shakespeare, go to the box office, and buy tickets for some local live theater.

Spice It Up

If you’re wondering what to do for the Super Bowl, why not spice it up and have a Chili Party? Ms. Moffly is planning to host a bevy of friends for a chili tasting party. You can eat, drink, and watch all the great commercials! Or the game. . . . Can you smell the spicy habañeros as they sizzle in the pan? Delicioso!

If you’d rather lift up your phone than dust off your pots and pans, check out Joey B’s Famous Chili Hub, 118 River Road Ext in Cos Cob (203) 661-0573, famouschilihub.com and order their Domiziano’s Famous Cos Cob Chili to go.

Best Sports Bars

So what if Ms. Moffly doesn’t know the difference between a touchdown and a tackle. Some people go to sports bars to watch the game and some (ahem) to watch the men. On Saturday night in the spirit of trying new things in the New Year, my girl friends and I decided to put down the Sauvignon Blanc and to pick up a Bud Light. Is there anything cuter than men rooting for their favorite teams? You never know who you’ll cozy up to at the bar. . . Mr. (sports fan) Right?

Check out Ms. Moffly’s favorite Sports Bars* (Did I just say that?):

Green Shopping

Consignment shopping is Ms. Moffly’s favorite kind of recycling—you can shop and help the environment. I shudder to think of Prada kitten heels piled on top of a Dolce and Gabbana handbag in a land-fill! With clothing often selling at 1/4 of the original price, I say, “Go Green!”

To take the guess work out of your next shopping (recycling) trip, Ms. Moffly has picked out her favorite local consignment shops:

Roundabout Designer Closeouts and Consignments

Exclusively features high-end designer shoes, handbags, and clothing by all the sought after designers. I’m in love! Don’t miss their clearance sale happening right NOW-- up to 75% off. Two locations: 48 West Putnam Ave Greenwich, CT 203-552-0787 and 170 Post Rd Westport, CT...
